Millie by Vicki Chezem

The sun is shining
it is spring and
today we buried Millie.
We toss our fistfuls of dirt
leave the cemetery
and walk to the junkyard.
Her car sits demolished
on a flat-bed truck.
We climb and search
among congealed blood and shattered glass
for the last moments of Millie's life.
Getting down we shake the car and
blood trickles
onto the rusty surface of the truck.
We stare, silent
until the dripping stops.
Louise pulls a Kleenex
from her purse and
soaks up her sister's blood
then returns it to her purse and
snaps it closed.
